ABOUT THE ROLE


Associations International (AI), an association management company based in Lexington, Kentucky, is seeking a new Executive Director (ED) to lead the Utility Solid Waste Activities Group (USWAG), following the upcoming retirement of the current ED. This role provides strategic, operational, and administrative leadership in collaboration with the USWAG Board of Directors and AI. The Executive Director advances USWAGs mission through strong governance, effective advocacy, member engagement, and organizational growth.


The ideal candidate will bring experience in association leadership, regulatory advocacy, and stakeholder relationsparticularly within the electric utility, environmental, or related sectors. They must be able to build consensus among a diverse membership, navigate complex regulatory landscapes, engage with federal and state agencies, and represent USWAG as a credible industry voice. This position reports to both the AI Chairman and USWAG Board of Directors with responsibilities aligned to USWAGs bylaws, strategic plan, and budget.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Execute strategic plans, budgets, and financial strategy

  • Oversee daily operations, programs, and services aligned with member needs

  • Evaluate new initiatives and revenue opportunities

  • Serve as advisor and facilitator to the Board

  • Represent USWAG publicly and professionally as spokesperson and advocate

  • Serve as a liaison between the Technical Committee Chairs and the Board

  • Oversee Board and Technical Committee nominations, elections, orientation, and succession planning

  • Ensure compliance with the organizations bylaws and policies and applicable regulatory requirements

  • Foster a member-centric culture to drive engagement and retention

  • Maintain and build collaborative relationships with members, relevant regulatory agencies, industry coalitions, and other partners

  • Identify new areas for membership growth and expansion

  • Lead communication strategy including digital, media, and member updates

  • Support development of technical content and policy updates

  • Oversee planning and execution of events, conferences, and workshops


QUALIFICATIONS


Required



  • Experience with regulatory agencies, processes, and technical advocacy (background in the electric utility industry or environmental regulation preferred)

  • Strategic and political acumen to navigate complex stakeholder environments

  • Strong communication, writing, public speaking, and advocacy skills to represent USWAG and attract members

  • Proven project management skills and experience working with or supporting a Board of Directors

  • Bachelors degree; advanced degree or credentials preferred

  • Travel of up to 20% for business needs, including meetings, conferences, and site visits


Preferred



  • Established network with agencies such as EPA and DOT/PHMSA

  • Understanding of technical advocacy vs. political lobbying

  • Experience in membership-based organizations, coalition-building, or prior Executive Director/board service
